Zuhair Murad: Miley Cyrus Defined My Career

Looks like Miley finally got the memo! While not always synonymous with career-defining style, Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad credits the star with catapulting him to the big leagues. “We got many calls, many e-mails, some of them just for congratulations and some of them for orders,” he tells nymag.com of the elaborate gown Cyrus wore to the 2009 Academy Awards.

“It’s a very special art,” he says of his handmade creations, designed for “women who love fashion” and buy pieces “to be special, to be different.” And though A-listers flock to his capricious designs, including Jennifer Lopez, who wore his sequin-dusted gown to last year’s Met Gala (“People were crying,” he insists), Murad is forever grateful to his first high-profile fan. “Many, many, many celebrities at the same time start wearing my clothes,” he explains. “But the biggest occasion, the first one, was Miley Cyrus at the Oscars.”
