How to get Miley’s Feather Hair Extension Look

Indulge your inner Pocahontas and ruffle a few feathers with the hottest beauty trend of the moment soaring in Hollywood: feather hair extensions.

Bohemian chic but reminiscent of the 70s hipster vibe, feather hair extensions are a playful and noveau way to add length and a powerful pop of color to an otherwise drab head of hair. The extensions, known as saddles, are usually made from the extra-long feathers of roosters and are typically used by fly fisherman to mimic insects sitting atop of a body of water.

Costing anywhere from $15 to $50 a piece, the hair extensions (or feather highlights) are clamped into the hair using extension beads or metal clamps and usually last six to eight weeks. Even cooler? The feathers can be curled, blow-dryed, straightened and styled just like real hair.

No one quite knows how the trend took flight, but the hair accessories are a favorite of Nicole Scherzinger, Hillary Duff, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and even American Idol judge Steven Tyler.
