As I took my seat amidst hordes of young Miley Cyrus fans and their very patient parents at Acer Arena in Sydney last night it quickly became apparent that I was a little out of place – the whole stadium was buzzing with hyperactive, fidgeting tweens desperate to see their idol, and the anticipation was killing them. So it’s no surprise that the minute Miley emerged on stage the air was pierced by the sort of shrill screams that would scare even Justin Bieber.
Wearing black leather hot pants, thigh-high boots and a diamante encrusted bra – just one of six dazzling costumes that night – Cyrus opened her set with the up-tempo crowd pleaser ‘Liberty Walk’ before rolling straight into one of her biggest tracks, sing-a-long favourite ‘Party In The U.S.A.’ The singer hammed it up for the crowd, prowling the stage, flicking her hair and interacting with her band and back-up dancers like the veteran she is.
A three track mash-up of Joan Jett hits soon followed – ‘I Love Rock N Roll’, ‘Cherrybomb’ and ‘Bad Reputation’ – but that was just the beginning of her roster of covers for the night. Miley later performed her version of Poison’s ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’, an unexpected cover of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and an impressive rendition of Stevie Nicks’ ‘Landslide’. Although the covers weren’t met with the same zealous reaction as her originals, Cyrus did her best to put her own stamp on them, and ‘Landslide’ in particular provided a great backdrop for her powerful and surprisingly intuitive vocals.
The staging was impressive, comprising a two storey set and three huge screens, one at centre stage showing a montage of graphics and video clips and two more side of stage which gave punters a close-up of the action. Ramps jutted out into the crowd at four points around the stage and Cyrus used these to her full advantage, strutting right to the edge, much to the delight of the adoring crowd.
It was her upbeat pop tracks like ‘Fly On The Wall’, ‘7 Things’ and ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ that really stood out and engaged her fans. Although the ballads rolled out in the middle of the set showed Cyrus’ voice off to its full extent, the down tempo tracks did seem to lose momentum a little – or perhaps I should just put that down to the flagging energy of some of the younger members of the audience…
That said, it was her hugely successful ballad ‘The Climb’ that received the biggest reaction of the night, with the entire stadium on their feet, belting out every word and waving their arms in unison. As Miley signed off for the night, thanking the crowd once again for their support and telling them how much she loved them, the youngsters behind me geared up for one last send off.
“Are you ready?”
“Ok here goes… 1, 2, 3…”
“WE LOVE YOU TOO MILEY!!”
